What is su? - superuser

Superuser/Root In Linux - What Is It?

Each time you try to make any critical system changes through the command line or GUI, you will be prompted for a password. You can log in as root(alternatively called superuser) to avoid this.

The superuser, also known as root, is the top level user - allowing administrator use to edit/change/install programs. It is not recommend you login as root user, as you can wipe the HDD.
